Southeast wins East Coast Challenge

Updated: Apr 4, 2020

Two Asheville bowlers, Hans Momkes and Steve Nelson, joined some of the best players from the Northeast and Southeast who came to beautiful Pinehurst NC to enjoy great competition and camaraderie and in search of bragging rights for their division for another year. This tournament between two divisions in the East has been played since 2000 and the record has been close. The Southeast now leads 10 to 7 with 2 years cancelled due to hurricanes. Each division was represented by 15 bowers. In addition to Momkes and Nelson, the Southeast was represented by male and female players from Pinehurst and different clubs in Florida.

The tournament started the first day with Pairs and Triples and the Southeast made their mark by winning 13 of the 18 matches, but the Northeast came back strong on the second day in Singles and Fours. They dominated the Fours matches but because of the advantage gained by the Southeast on Day 1 and by holding their own in the Singles matches, the Southeast held on to win the Motta Trophy by a comfortable margin.
